Are you an entrepreneur at heart? I am, and my actions echo this calling. I’ve been self-employed for the past eight years - I wouldn’t change it for anything.
While it’s different than being an employee in some ways, it holds many of the same components. One of which is the need to work in teams. Although entrepreneurs quickly learn that they sometimes have to wear every hat of the business, there are times when a task is beyond their capacity, and they call on others for collaboration.
This is where working with a team comes in. I personally like to work with people, not for them. This slight change in terms motivates me to a great degree. It’s also important that the work I am doing with them has meaning. It has to be creating a solution that is helpful to society. If I believe in something, I will work that much harder.
While what I’ve just explained is true for me, an entrepreneur, it’s also true for people who work at a company that is not their own.
People want to have purpose and meaning in their work. It’s what gets us out of bed in the morning with a little more spring to our step. People are motivated by doing good in the world and helping others. If they can do that every day they go into work, imagine what a happy company that creates.

If a company has a team that is on board doing what they love, just think of what great things they will accomplish. Productivity will be on the rise, and this will create growth. There will be a certain flow happening around the office or production area that will be natural and effective.
Imagine what great things we can accomplish as a society if we are all working on something we love with a team that empowers us. If we continue to work together, we will find solutions to societal needs, and bring them to market.
This in turn will help our economy grow while restoring the social fabrics of communities and the ecosystems that are being challenged by climate change. When you hear about the Global Goals or Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the news, a question that often gets posed is “who is going to pay for it?”
I believe that we are all going to pay what we can to accomplish these goals. Whether it be working on the front line problem solving, or paying a premium on a product that is fairly traded and produced: we are all part of the solution.
So if we as a society want to achieve sustainable development, it truly starts with each individual taking an important look at what work they do, and what meaning it has. Although you might not have your dream job today that you are passionate about, it’s never too early to think about how you are going to get into that position.
The sooner we shift towards a restorative economy and an empowered workforce, the sooner we can accomplish the global goals.

October 2016 marks the 2nd ever Campus Sustainability Month which officially kicked off on the 1st of the month. Since 2003, Campus Sustainability Day has been celebrated internationally, however in 2015; the events flowed over to fill the calendar for an entire month.
