How Setting Goals Can Lead to Sustainable Success

Sustainable Development Goals

A couple of months ago I asked an important question in a blog post.  Are You Interested in Learning More About Sustainability?  Time has passed, but the question remains, and I urge you to ask yourselves again.

To be interested in sustainability – and to learn more about how it really works – means that you are interested in how to properly manage planetary resources.

I say this because sustainability comes down to this point in many ways – it’s a common denominator in sustainable development, and present in all of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set out by the United Nations.

Think about it, each of the 17 goals link directly to resource management – both tangible and intangible. And, if we achieve these goals, we will achieve built to last, sustainable success in making our planet more inclusive and better for all inhabitants today, and for generations to come.

Here are a few examples:

Goal #2: Zero Hunger – this can be achieved through proper management of food by reducing waste through innovative movements such as the one that made ugly fruit a thing of beauty.  Accessibility to healthy food is key to growth for all citizens; making good food available to all, makes for stronger communities.

Goal #7: Affordable & Clean Energy– by harnessing the power of wind and sun, we are bringing light and warmth into people’s homes.  Encouraging and supporting the generation of green energy will not only help reduce the impacts of climate change; it will also make energy more accessible across the globe.

Goal #12: Responsible Consumption & Production– first thought that comes to mind: reuse!  By properly caring for our possessions, we will make them last longer.  That means when we no longer need them, we can give them a second chance through donation or selling them.  This will: keep waste out of the landfill, decrease the amount of resources depleted from the Earth, and offer up something to someone that might not be able to buy brand new.

Goal #17: Partnerships for the Goals– this resource is intangible and imperative. Proper management of relationships within communities and across the globe is fundamental for healthy progress and growth.

On Planet Earth, we are all in it together – we are all in the same boat.  Sustainable Development Goals have been set, and if we find a way to row in rhythm, success will be achieved.  A sustained healthy environment today is enjoyed by the present population. Beyond that, it is a wonderful inheritance to pass on to the next generation.
