Shining A Light On Climate Change Solutions

 Shine Light on Climate ChangeOver 20 years ago, countries came together to join an international treaty that was created as a framework to combat global climate change.

Today, this very treaty, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) hosts near 200 members and is the centerpiece for collaborative efforts that act on climate change and reduce the impact for humanity and our fragile ecosystems.

As we approach the one year anniversary of the Paris Agreement and near its ratification, now is a great time to reflect on what has been achieved to date.  This serves both as inspiration to continue moving forward, and also serves as an opportunity to celebrate the innovative projects that have come to life.

Luckily there is an initiative showcasing transformative climate action that is spearheaded by the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat called Momentum for Change.  Designed to shine a light on solutions that are occurring at the ground level, it identifies the very projects and efforts leading the way to a healthier, more sustainable environment for the global community.

Actor and Climate Champion Marc Ruffalo does a great job explaining the specifics of Momentum for Change in this short video.

To keep the momentum going from the commitments pledged at prior Conventions and through the Sustainable Development Goals, the top “game-changing” initiatives have been awarded by Momentum for Change, and the winners were announced just last week.  A small variety of projects from across the globe with emphasis on the three core areas of focus which are:

  • Women for Results;
  • Financing for Climate Friendly Investment; and
  • Information and Communications Technology Solutions.

Not only are these areas of focus amazing each on their own, they gain strength when paired together.  Like in the example of the Women's Empowerment for Resilience and Adaptation Against Climate Change in Uganda.

“Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity and change.”
 Brené Brown

This quote rings true in many ways & puts a positive spin on the cumbersome tasks and work we are faced with.  Climate Change is slowly inching its way into the lives of many as a reality, however in some places around the world, it’s crashing down and has been for years.

What happens on one side of the globe inevitably affects the other, so upon reading the list of the 13 projects awarded this year, keep in mind that no matter where the project came from, each one is truly a win for all.
