Mexico is a resting place for the migration of Monarch butterflies, one of nature's most important pollinators. Reforestation will protect these critical biodiversity habitats. Learn more
With your help, we will:
- Create habitat for monarch butterflies
- Work with indigenous communities
- Reduce soil erosion & prevent landslides
- This project focuses on both farmland conversion and forest restoration to improve biodiversity habitats in an essential migration corridor for numerous species, most notably the Monarch butterfly. By densely planting native species with the cooperation of local landowners and indigenous communities, we can make sure that the monarch butterfly ecosystems in Michoacán and the State of Mexico's natural beauty are restored for future generations of people and wildlife.
- Communities and landowners will be taught sustainable forestry practices such as proper planting techniques, sustainable harvesting, the importance of recycling and waste management, and land and plant protection. This will create jobs and opportunities for those most impacted by the project.
- A personalized tree certificate (see gallery) to say thanks for your donation. We'll also send you reports on our monarch restoration projects, so you can track the impact your trees are having on the community and environment.
- To maximize the impact of your donation, our partner will plant native species, including Oyamel Fir, smooth-bark Mexican pine, Chihuahua pine, and Cupressus lindleyi.

ABOUT MONARCH RESTORATION
The pressure on the forestland of the monarch butterfly winter habitat, as on all forestland in Michoacán, is high, and the demand for wood is great. Since much of the mountainous area of the monarch's winter habitat has been lost to clearcutting, our goal is to reduce pressure on the relict forest. As we restore the land around the Monarch Biosphere Reserve and the surrounding communities, we create migratory rest stops for the monarchs as they journey to and from Mexico (a buffer zone). The ecological benefits of this are manifold. Reforestation protects and enhances monarch habitat, protects forest microclimates, and helps prevent desertification of the region.
Why Plant for Monarch Reforestation?
Create Habitat
Every fall, monarch butterflies use their antennae to migrate south to Mexico and avoid harsh northern winters. Monarchs roost in pine and cypress trees that offer protection and help them moderate the temperature and humidity of the roost site. Reforestation in Mexico will provide a habitat for the monarchs as they settle during the winter months.
Support Indigenous Communities
The plots of land we reforest are often within an ejido or indigenous community. Therefore, all individuals within that community have a right to work the land. We partner with community leaders to promote the land returning to forests. This process ensures community support and the long-term success of the forest.
Stabilize Soil and Prevent Landslides
Reforestation in Mexico will not only provide a habitat for monarch butterflies and jobs for local communities, but also reduce erosion and prevent landslides. The trees will capture any excess water through their roots and slow down water absorption into the soil, preventing harmful waterslide erosion.
