One Tree Planted is a 501(c)(3) non-profit environmental charity with a focus on global reforestation. We are based in Shelburne, VT and our tax ID# is 46-4664562.
We partner with carefully selected reforestation organizations in 6 regions: North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa, Europe, and Oceania. Donors can support our mission through traditional reforestation, urban forestry, or one of our impact funds.
Yes. One Tree Planted is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization and your donation is tax-deductible within the guidelines of U.S. law. To claim a donation as a deduction on your U.S. taxes, please keep your email donation receipt as your official record. We'll send it to you upon successful completion of your donation.
No matter what your donation is, the projects you fund will always support every step of the process of restoring healthy and thriving forests. Tree costs vary based on region, partner, and unique overall objective of a reforestation project. Learn more about our model.
The time between your donation and tree planting will vary depending on several factors. Our work doesn’t begin and end with trees in the ground. Every project goes through several phases, including identifying a critical reforestation need, site analyses, producing and procuring seedlings, planting, and a three-year monitoring period to understand tree survival. From beginning to end, we work with our planting partners to ensure the planted trees leave a lasting positive impact on biodiversity and human wellbeing.
We are an accredited non-profit organization that holds itself to the highest of standards for transparency and accountability. We are proud to have a Platinum Transparency rating with GuideStar, and to be affiliated with leading global initiatives, including being an implementation partner of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, a Council Member of the US Chapter of the One Trillion Trees Initiative, and an Official Endorser of the New York Declaration on Forests.
One Tree Planted works with local planting partners in more than 80 countries, in diverse ecosystems. Some of our partners plant a few thousand trees per year, and some plant over a million trees per year. Our monitoring strategy relies on five pillars that enable us to adjust to the many scales and geographies where we work — and ensure trust is built between all partners. These pillars are: (1) Project Proposal & Vetting, (2) Partner Reporting & GPS Verified Photos, (3) Drone & Satellite Imagery Monitoring, (4) Site Visits, and (5) Emergent Technology Trials.
While One Tree Planted’s reforestation projects have important benefits in terms of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon, we do not currently pursue verification for certified carbon credits for all our projects. Carbon certification and verification requires a unique set of procedures, costs and resources to ensure delivery of projects that not only deliver carbon credits but also have positive environmental and socioeconomic benefits.
We understand there is high demand for quality carbon projects and we are actively working with our planting partners to build capacity and scale projects to generate certified carbon credits globally. If you are a business seeking to engage in projects that generate carbon credits, our team can work with you directly as each business case will be different.
We do offer carbon offsets through a program that entails conservation of a mature forest rather than reforestation as an option for credits to be claimed by individuals and other parties. After purchase, these offsets are retired via the Climate Action Reserve.
One Tree Planted does not make any representations or warranties of any particular set of carbon certification methodology or standards. This is determined by our planting partners on a project specific basis.
Please email us at carbon@onetreeplanted.org to discuss the development of projects with carbon credits.

Amazing! We are so thrilled that you want to do more to protect our beautiful planet. Our Tree Ambassador program might be of interest - Making an impact isn't about one person taking one big action, it's about a community of like-minded people coming together and taking small actions every day.
Tree Ambassadors are passionate environmental stewards who want to represent One Tree Planted — and aren't afraid to get their hands in the dirt to make an impact at work, at home, or at school.
