One Tree Planted is a non-profit organization created by Matt Hill as a non-profit in Shelburne, Vermont in 2014. We are a public 501(c)(3) charity and our tax ID# is 46-4664562.
As of the end of 2021, One Tree Planted has planted over 40 million trees in more than 43 countries across the globe since 2014.
We partner with carefully selected reforestation organizations in 6 regions: North America, Latin America, Asia, Africa, Europe, the Pacific. You can choose a project to donate to within in each region – one dollar plants one tree. We pool the donations for each project and send the funds to our reforestation partner, enabling them to cover the costs required to get these trees in the ground.
Yes. One Tree Planted is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization and your donation is tax-deductible within the guidelines of U.S. law. To claim a donation as a deduction on your U.S. taxes, please keep your email donation receipt as your official record. We'll send it to you upon successful completion of your donation.
Tree costs vary based on region, partner, and unique overall objective of a reforestation project. Below is a simple average breakdown of how we get trees planted, and in some cases there are additional or greater costs to account for. In those instances we may combine resources with partners for co-funding to make a bigger impact at scale, but you can rest assured knowing that your donations will always go towards restoring healthy and thriving forests.
The time between your donation and the actual tree planting will vary depending on the region you have chosen and the time of year. Planting usually happens during the rainy season, when the soil provides optimum conditions for tree survival.
We work hard to keep you in the loop on how your donation is being used. When your planting session takes place, we will send you an update with photos and information provided by our reforestation partners. This will include details such as the tree species planted, expected survival rates, community engagement, and ecological benefits.
We remain closely engaged with our partners to monitor project progress and require reporting and photos at several stages over the life of the project, including an update on seedling production and site preparation, a report soon after planting is complete, and a follow-up report one year after planting. The key metrics we track include total number of trees planted, species planted, survival rate, area under restoration, and total number of permanent and seasonal jobs created. Additional performance indicators may be reported according to the objectives of each project. To complement our partners’ existing protocols, One Tree Planted is currently in the process of implementing monitoring workflows that incorporate geospatial technologies such as high-resolution satellite and drone imagery. These tools will enable One Tree Planted to further validate the long-term success of projects.
While One Tree Planted’s reforestation projects have important benefits in terms of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon, we do not currently pursue verification for certified carbon credits for all our projects. Carbon certification and verification requires a unique set of procedures, costs and resources to ensure delivery of projects that not only deliver carbon credits but also have positive environmental and socioeconomic benefits.
We understand there is high demand for quality carbon projects and we are actively working with our planting partners to build capacity and scale projects to generate certified carbon credits globally. If you are a business seeking to engage in projects that generate carbon credits, our team can work with you directly as each business case will be different.
We do offer carbon offsets through a program that entails conservation of a mature forest rather than reforestation as an option for credits to be claimed by individuals and other parties. After purchase, these offsets are retired via the American Carbon Registry.
One Tree Planted does not make any representations or warranties of any particular set of carbon certification methodology or standards. This is determined by our planting partners on a project specific basis.
Yes! We do our best to take photos at all of our planting projects. (Sometimes mother nature can get in the way!) Check our our galleries here.
Yes! You can dedicate or gift your trees to someone you care about by clicking on the "Gift Trees" button on any project page.
You will be prompted to fill in the details for a digital gift card that will be sent to the recipient via email or text message. After gifting a tree, you will also receive a tree certificate which you can pass on to them if you'd like.
If you're looking for a physical gift, we also offer a selection of eco-friendly products available for purchase, each item plants a tree!
Definitely! You can check out using PayPal or credit card, and the amount in USD will be converted from your local currency. All our agreements with reforestation partners are in US dollars, making it easy to ensure we can deliver one tree for one dollar.

Heck yes! You can start a fundraiser as an individual or a team here. If you're more of a social media person, you can also run your fundraiser on Facebook. You can run it however you like! Maybe you want to dedicate your birthday to tree-planting instead of getting gifts from your friends. Maybe you're challenging yourself to do something awesome – like running a marathon or give up meat for a month – and you want your friends to motivate you by donating to a great cause. Or maybe you're running an event and you'd like to donate your proceeds rather than collecting ticket money.
If you've got a cool fundraising idea, please let us knowso we can share the love!
Yes, of course! We have community volunteer opportunities throughout the year for Earth Day, World Environment Day and Plant a Tree Day. Check out our community events calendar to see events coming soon near you.
Amazing! We are so thrilled that you want to do more to protect our beautiful planet. Our Tree Ambassador program might be of interest - Making an impact isn't about one person taking one big action, it's about a community of like-minded people coming together and taking small actions every day.
Tree Ambassadors are passionate environmental stewards who want to represent One Tree Planted — and aren't afraid to get their hands in the dirt to make an impact at work, at home, or at school. Fundraising is another fun way to get involved and help the planet by sharing your passion with family and friends.

We would be happy to provide Tree Certificates in bulk for your recipients.
Please contact us to receive a spreadsheet where you will be asked to provide: your recipients' information, the number of trees you would like donated on their behalf, and at which of our planting locations you would like the trees planted.
We can either add the certificate files to a Google Drive folder, where you can download them and send them to your recipients, or we can send them on your behalf. There is a sheet in the spreadsheet designated to each option!
Once you have completed the appropriate sheet, we'll send you an invoice for the total number of trees you would like to plant along with a $25 USD fee for creating the certificates. We will then create the certificates upon receipt of the donation.
