One Tree Planted is a non-profit organization created by Matt Hill as a non-profit in Shelburne, Vermont in 2014. We are a public 501(c)(3) charity and our tax ID# is 46-4664562.
As of August 2020, One Tree Planted has been able to plant 11 million trees in the ground since we started in 2014!
We partner with carefully selected reforestation organizations in 4 regions: North America, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. You can choose a project to donate to within in each region – one dollar plants one tree. We pool the donations for each project and send the funds to our reforestation partner, enabling them to cover the costs required to get these trees in the ground.
Yes. One Tree Planted is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization and your donation is tax-deductible within the guidelines of U.S. law. To claim a donation as a deduction on your U.S. taxes, please keep your email donation receipt as your official record. We'll send it to you upon successful completion of your donation.
Tree costs vary based on region, partner, and unique overall objective of a reforestation project. Below is a simple average breakdown of how we get trees planted, and in some cases there are additional or greater costs to account for. In those instances we may combine resources with partners for co-funding to make a bigger impact at scale, but you can rest assured knowing that your donations will always go towards restoring healthy and thriving forests.
The time between your donation and the actual tree planting will vary depending on the region you have chosen and the time of year. Planting usually happens during the rainy season, when the soil provides optimum conditions for tree survival.
We work hard to keep you in the loop on how your donation is being used. When your planting session takes place, we will send you an update with photos and information provided by our reforestation partners. This will include details such as the tree species planted, expected survival rates, community engagement, and ecological benefits.
We remain closely engaged with our partners to monitor project progress and require reporting and photos at several stages over the life of the project, including an update on seedling production and site preparation, a report soon after planting is complete, and a follow-up report one year after planting. The key metrics we track include total number of trees planted, species planted, survival rate, area under restoration, and total number of permanent and seasonal jobs created. Additional performance indicators may be reported according to the objectives of each project. To complement our partners’ existing protocols, One Tree Planted is currently in the process of implementing monitoring workflows that incorporate geospatial technologies such as high-resolution satellite and drone imagery. These tools will enable One Tree Planted to further validate the long-term success of projects.
By planting a tree with One Tree Planted, you are not receiving ownership of certified carbon credits.
While One Tree Planted’s reforestation projects have important benefits in terms of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon, we do not currently pursue verification for certified carbon credits nor do we offer such credits that can be claimed by any other parties. Verification requires a unique set of procedures, costs, or resources that are not always available when prioritizing reforestation for environmental restoration purposes. Such decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis by our local partners on the ground. One Tree Planted does not make any representations or warranties of any particular set of carbon certification methodology or standards.
That being said, if you are a business seeking estimates for how many trees you should plant based on your sustainability or carbon neutrality objectives, our team can work with you directly on this. Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with the details.
Yes! We do our best to take photos at all of our planting projects. (Sometimes mother nature can get in the way!) Check out our galleries here.
Yes! You can dedicate or gift your trees to someone you care about by selecting "Gift Some Trees" on any project page. You will be prompted to design a digital gift card to send to the recipient via email or text message. We'll also send you a tree certificate which you can pass on to them if you like.
If you're looking for a physical gift, we also have some eco-friendly Tree Gifts available for purchase.
Definitely! You can check out using PayPal or credit card, and the amount in USD will be converted from your local currency. All our agreements with reforestation partners are in US dollars, making it easy to ensure we can deliver one tree for one dollar.

There are many options for partnering with us, but the most common is One For One. We can also organize tree-planting days for your company's next employee engagement initiative.
Heck yes! You can start a fundraiser as an individual or a team here. If you're more of a social media person, you can also run your fundraiser on Facebook. You can run it however you like! Maybe you want to dedicate your birthday to tree-planting instead of getting gifts from your friends. Maybe you're challenging yourself to do something awesome – like running a marathon or give up meat for a month – and you want your friends to motivate you by donating to a great cause. Or maybe you're running an event and you'd like to donate your proceeds rather than collecting ticket money.
If you've got a cool fundraising idea, please let us knowso we can share the love!

Our Tree Ambassador program might be of interest - it has lots of interesting information about trees and the environment, as well as details on how you can organize your own tree planting initiative in your local area. Fundraising is another fun way to get involved and help the planet by sharing your passion with family and friends.
