Landscape Strategy in
the U.S. & Canada

From the towering forests of the Pacific Northwest to the dramatic slopes of the American Southwest and the rolling ridge lines of Appalachia, forests across the U.S. and Canada face unprecedented threats. These landscapes are home to at-risk species, culturally significant lands, and communities who rely on healthy forests for their livelihoods and traditions. Wildfire, drought, invasive pests, and historic land use have disrupted critical ecosystems and threatened water security for millions of people.

One Tree Planted is working to address these challenges, and restore the degraded habitats of critical biodiversity such as the Pacific Madrone, Eastern Hemlock, Chinook Salmon, and Cerulean Warbler. We collaborate closely with Indigenous nations, local nonprofits, and regional coalitions to ensure restoration efforts are grounded in ecological expertise and community priorities. Together, we are reviving ecosystems, supporting cultural and economic resilience, and ensuring the U.S. and Canada’s iconic forests will continue to thrive for future generations.

The American Southwest is a landscape of extreme climate and ecological sensitivity, where hardy forests play a critical role—not just in providing shelter for uniquely American species—but in securing water resources for millions of people, including those living in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

The Pacific Northwest is one of North America’s most ecologically diverse and culturally rich forested landscapes. Prior to European settlement, old-growth forest covered two-thirds of the Pacific Northwest; by the early 2000s, approximately 72% of that had been lost.
