Panama's tropical maritime climate consists of coastal lowlands and diverse rainforests and jungles. Reforestation in Panama will restore degraded forests and protect existing ecosystems. Learn more
With your help, we will:
- Restore essential watersheds for soil stability and erosion control
- Sequester carbon in the biomass of the forests through climate stability
- Impact local communities by creating jobs and enabling economic growth
- Our Panama reforestation project focuses on restoring degraded landscapes, promoting reforestation, and protecting forests. It will help create buffer zones around protected areas and establish conservation between forest patches where possible. This large-scale project in rural Panama will restore land that has been converted into low density cattle ranching and allow the local communities to be stewards of the land and forests. Reforestation activities will support a unique nature-based economy and enhance biodiversity conservation throughout the region. 🌲
- Our Panama project will support local communities to plant, protect, manage, and monitor mixed-species forests, offering long-term employment to local communities and livelihood improvements while protecting the important biodiversity that relies on these forests to survive. The project activities are aligned with the national development plans which promote forest conservation and enhance ecosystem services. Panama has adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) where reforestation will contribute to reducing poverty by creating local jobs, encouraging gender equality by employing women in leadership positions, and enact climate action by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

- We always plant a mix of diverse, native species from local nuseries. This project is working to replenish local forests, so the native species grown in the nurseries including calophyllum brasiliense, spondias mombin, ficus insipida, wild cashew, west indian elm, and sapodilla.

About Panama
Panama has a lush tropical landscape with hills and mountains running through most of Panama, known as the Cordillera Central. Panama, located about 600 miles above the equator, has a warm climate with a long rainy season and a shorter dry season that is ideal for tree planting.
Though Panama is small in size, it is rich in biodiversity. Millions of years ago, Panama served as an area for species from the North and South American continents to mix, and its climate and landscapes encouraged ecosystems in the area to flourish. Panama has over 1200 species of plants, with over 130 species unique to the area. A wide variety of animals can be found in the country as well including capybaras, porcupines, jaguars, peccaries, anteaters, and toucans.
Why Plant Trees in Panama?
Soil Stability and Erosion Control
Riparian buffers play a role in increasing water infiltration and slowing the movement of water. This interception of rainwater will slow the accumulation of water on the ground giving the soil more time to absorb moisture.
Create Jobs and Enhance Economic Growth
Our Panama project contributes to reducing poverty by creating local jobs and places an emphasis on preserving the natural capital and reducing the negative effects of climate change by linking natural resource management to economic development, and protecting, conserving, and sustainably using natural capital and ecosystems.
Sequester Carbon and Stabilize the Climate
During the process of reforestation, there is a large uptake of carbon from the atmosphere that is fixed in the biomass of the forests and in the soil. This plays a fundamental role in the global carbon cycle and in mitigating climate change.
