Once blanketed with oak, birch, and hazel forests that housed Black Poplars and Arran Whitebeams, only a small fraction of the UKβs native woodland and peatland habitats still exist. Today, just 14% of the landscape's priority habitats are considered to be in good condition.

Stretching across Central and Eastern Europe, the Carpathians contain the largest expanse of old-growth temperate forest in Europe and are a biodiversity stronghold for species like the European Bison, Brown Bear, and Eurasian Lynx. The region plays a vital role in Europeβs freshwater systems and supports thousands of plant and animal species.

The Mediterranean basin is the worldβs second largest biodiversity hotspot and a landscape of extraordinary ecological and cultural significance. Centuries of human disturbance, paired with increasing wildfires, invasive species (such as the toxic Lantana Camera), and land degradation, led to just 17% of its original forest cover remaining intact by the early 2000s. Today, forests and wooded lands cover 28% of the region.
