Landscape Strategy in
Europe

Europe is home to a wide range of critical ecosystemsβ€”from ancient boreal forests to Mediterranean biodiversity corridorsβ€”many of which are increasingly under threat from climate change, habitat degradation, and unsustainable land use. Despite being a relatively small continent, Europe holds significant ecological value, with the Mediterranean alone hosting 10% of the world’s plant species on just 1% of the planet’s surface. Animals such as the European Bison, Meadow Viper, and Eurasian Otter face habitat loss that can only be remedied by reforestation and targeted recovery efforts.

One Tree Planted is working across key European landscapes to protect these unique habitats by restoring ecological connectivity and supporting biodiversity conservation in line with continent-wide strategies such as EU Nature Directives - Natura 2000. Together, we can ensure that Europe’s old-growth and highly fragmented forests are able to reconnect and regenerate.

Plant trees for impact

Reforestation is one of the best ways to restore ecosystems that have been degraded or deforested. Plant trees to support reforestation work in the locations where it is needed most.

Trees planted

Once blanketed with oak, birch, and hazel forests that housed Black Poplars and Arran Whitebeams, only a small fraction of the UK’s native woodland and peatland habitats still exist. Today, just 14% of the landscape's priority habitats are considered to be in good condition.

Stretching across Central and Eastern Europe, the Carpathians contain the largest expanse of old-growth temperate forest in Europe and are a biodiversity stronghold for species like the European Bison, Brown Bear, and Eurasian Lynx. The region plays a vital role in Europe’s freshwater systems and supports thousands of plant and animal species.

The Mediterranean basin is the world’s second largest biodiversity hotspot and a landscape of extraordinary ecological and cultural significance. Centuries of human disturbance, paired with increasing wildfires, invasive species (such as the toxic Lantana Camera), and land degradation, led to just 17% of its original forest cover remaining intact by the early 2000s. Today, forests and wooded lands cover 28% of the region.
