How Can I Celebrate Plant a Tree Day?

Each year on September 28th, One Tree Planted celebrates Plant a Tree Day, a flagship awareness day that inspires people around the world to take action for nature.

The most impactful way to celebrate Plant a Tree Day is by, of course, planting trees! Whether it’s a native tree planted in your backyard, a volunteer event with your local environmental organization, or donating to One Tree Planted, every tree counts. Want to do more? From hugging a tree to starting a forest fundraiser or getting the word out, there are plenty of creative ways to get involved!

Support the Reforestation Movement with One Tree Planted

Donate to support our mission

Of course, at the top of our list is donating to One Tree Planted! When you support reforestation with us, you’re contributing to a global network of restored forests. Every gift is regenerative, growing through the power of people like you who choose to act. Your support helps restore critical habitats, heal landscapes, and inspire others.

Get the word out

Plant a tree and share it with your network. Tag a friend and tell them why reforestation matters to you. Forward our newsletter with a personal note: why it moved you, and why it might move them too. Have a conversation about the important of trees and reforestation with a colleague or friend. You have more influence than you think!

Start a forest fundraiser

If you’re feeling inspired to do even more, consider starting your own forest fundraiser! Follow the simple steps to create a customized page where people can contribute, set a goal for how much you’d like to raise, and get the word out! You can also start a fundraiser right from your Facebook or Instagram account. Simply go to your profile, create a post, tap the “Raise money” option, select One Tree Planted as your beneficiary, and share it with your network!

Get Your Hands Dirty

Plant a native tree in your yard

If you have the space and resources, there are few things more rewarding than planting a native tree right in your own yard. The best time to plant a tree depends on a few factors, including where you’re located and the species of tree you want to plant. It's important to understand your regional climate and plan accordingly. This will give new trees time to grow strong roots before facing seasonal temperature extremes. For more guidance, read our detailed guide on how to plant a tree.

Join a local volunteer event and invite a friend to join you

Nothing says Plant a Tree Day like getting your hands dirty for nature! Volunteer for a fall clean-up, trail work, tree planting, or other opportunity to make an environmental impact in your own community. You can find events by checking with local environmental organizations or parks departments. In the spirit of Planting it Forward, invite a friend or make it a family outing!

Plant (or plan) your pollinator garden

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, “one out of every three bites of food we eat exists because of animal pollinators like bees, butterflies and moths, birds and bats, and beetles and other insects.” Unfortunately, these pollinators are in trouble — but we can all do our part to help by growing and encouraging native plants in our yards (even in a pot on a balcony!).

Celebrate in Creative, Eco-Friendly Ways

Watch our Plant a Tree Day video and share it with someone

Get inspired for the holiday and learn what it’s all about. Share with your friends and family, with an invitation to help you celebrate Plant a Tree Day!

Read a book about trees and pass it on

One of the best ways to show your appreciation for something is by trying to understand it better. That’s no different when it comes to nature! Read our list of recommended books about nature and trees to get inspiration for your Plant a Tree Day read! When you’re done, share a few of your favorite quotes from the book, or pass it on to someone you think should read it.

Find a place to experience the Japanese Practice of Forest Bathing

To experience forest bathing, look for a nearby nature preserve, state park, or quiet wooded trail where you can unplug and immerse yourself in the sights, sounds, and scents of the forest. The key is to choose a spot that feels peaceful and undisturbed—somewhere you can slow down, walk mindfully, and connect with the natural world without distraction.

Everything we do, whether it’s making a donation or sharing a message, affects the world around us. Plant a Tree Day leverages the power of community to multiply individual actions into collective impact. Help us make Plant a Tree Day count: Plant it Forward today!
