130K Trees Planted in British Columbia
We're thrilled to share that a reforestation project of 130,000 tree seedlings has been completed 33 km east of 70 Mile House, British Columbia, Canada. The planting site was part of the 2017 Elephant Hill Wildfire, which burned 207,000 acres, within the largest area of continuous high intensity burn in that wildfire.
The project was completed as the result of a collaborative effort between One Tree Planted and the Forest Carbon Initiative (FCI), with funding from donors and business partners of One Tree Planted, including: Vancouver White Caps MLS, Husqvarna, Thai Express, The House of Marley, Waterax, Ten Tree, and L'Oreal Canada.
You could say we had a pretty warm welcome :)
In the middle of the project area is the Siwash Lake Wilderness Resort, one of National Geographic’s “Unique Lodges of the World”. This resort built its image on the “unspoiled scenery of Canada’s Wild West.” This reforestation project will improve the rate of ecological recovery and serve as a test bed for remediating other wildfire-affected areas in the Caribou.
Tree species planted include Lodgepole Pine, Yellow Pine, Douglas Fir, Larch, Spruce, Cottonwood, and Aspen.
This restoration work will improve the rate of recovery to forest conditions by reducing the regeneration delay and improving the uniformity of recovery. "The saplings may look small now, but in the course of our lifetime this area could become a dense forest once again" says Matt Hill, the founder of One Tree Planted.
Even more good news: about 6 weeks after this planting took place, we got the snapshot below of a sapling planted that day, along with the update that thanks to some healthy seasonal rains, the saplings were vibrant and sturdy and taking very well to their new forever home.
