    Restore Forests in Asia

    Making an Impact with One Tree Planted

    • Why We Do It

      Approximately 20% of global forest cover is found in Asia, and the region is classified as one of the most biologically diverse in the world. However, Asia's tropical rainforests are suffering from the world's highest rates of deforestation, which is fueled by wildfires, palm oil production, and illegal mining operations. Planting trees in Asia will nourish and revitalize the soil, improve water sources, and enhance air quality.

      Asia’s rainforests are some of the oldest in the world and are home to endemic species such as orangutans, the sloth bear, and the takin. Reforestation in Asian countries ensures the protection of hundreds and thousands of plant and animal species by restoring ecosystems and improving habitat stability.

    • How We Do It

      Our Asia projects seek to reverse the negative effects of deforestation and conventional agriculture by introducing community-based agroforestry to encourage the positive behavior of local communities and maintain forests as a sustainable source of income. By planting trees in Asia, you are helping to restore vital habitat for endangered wildlife, restore tropical forests that sequester carbon, and offer sustainable livelihood alternatives to farmers through regenerative agroforestry practices.

      Our incredible partners in Asia are working to ensure balance is restored to forest ecosystems and the local communities that depend on them. Efforts are focused on mobilizing support from a coalition of local and international partners to develop nurseries and plant thousands of native trees.     • What We Plant

      Every tree we plant will impact the surrounding ecosystem, and must be selected with great care.

      Our Asia projects focus on restoring native biodiversity and engaging communities with sustainable agroforestry. A typical planting might include a mix of native trees and companion plants such as cherry trees, teak, tropical hardwoods, and many other indigenous species. Species are carefully selected with a range of factors in mind, including the specific region, climate, and purpose of the planting.

    Project Reports

    Every One Tree Planted project begins with a detailed proposal from a local planting partner, which details where, why, and how the trees will be planted. After planting wraps up, our Monitoring, Reporting and Verification Team works closely with our reforestation partners to map and monitor their growing trees. This allows us to analyze the impact the trees will have on overall forest health, biodiversity, and surrounding communities.

    Why Plant Trees?

    Six Pillars of Reforestation

    Forests provide jobs to over 1.6 billion people, absorb harmful carbon from the atmosphere, and provide key ingredients for 25% of all medicines. Have you ever taken an Aspirin? It comes from the bark of a tree! At One Tree Planted, we focus on the 6 Pillars of Reforestation. These pillars are the foundation of why planting trees is such a significant action to take.


    Trees help to clean the air we breathe. Through their leaves and bark, they absorb harmful pollutants and release clean oxygen for us to breathe. In urban environments and other ecosystems, trees absorb pollutant gases such as nitrogen oxide, ozone, and carbon monoxide, and sweep up particles such as dust and smoke. Increasing levels of carbon dioxide caused by deforestation and fossil fuel combustion trap heat in the atmosphere.


    Trees play a key role in capturing rainwater and reducing the risk of natural disasters such as floods and landslides. Their intricate root systems act as natural filters, removing pollutants and slowing down the water’s absorption into the soil. This process prevents harmful waterslide erosion and reduces the risk of over-saturation and flooding. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Association, a mature evergreen tree can intercept more than 15,000 litres of water every year.


    A single tree can be home to hundreds of species of insects, fungi, mosses, mammals, and plants. Depending on the type of food and shelter they need, different forest animals require different types of habitat. Without trees, forest creatures would have nowhere to call home.

    Social Impact

    From arborists to loggers and researchers, the job opportunities provided by the forestry industry are endless. We don’t just rely on trees for work, though. Sustainable tree farming provides timber to build homes and shelters, and wood to burn for cooking and heating. Food-producing trees provide fruit, nuts, berries, and leaves for consumption by both humans and animals, and pack a powerful nutritional punch.


    Did you know that hospital patients with rooms overlooking trees recover faster than those without the same view? It’s impossible to ignore that feeling of elation you get while walking through a calm, quiet forest. Trees help reduce stress and anxiety, and allow us to reconnect with nature. In addition, shade provided by canopy cover helps to protect our skin from the ever-increasing harshness of the sun.


    Trees help cool the planet by absorbing and storing harmful greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide into their trunks, branches, and leaves — and releasing oxygen back into the atmosphere. In cities, trees can reduce ambient temperatures by up to 8° Celsius. With more than 50% of the world’s population living in cities — a number expected to increase to 66% by the year 2050 — urban trees are more important than ever.

    Fruits for All


    Read more

    This community agroforestry project focused on planting fruit trees on fallow lands around the country — especially in the eastern and central regions of Bhutan, where the poverty rate is high. The restoration approach was focused on improving the landscapes that were deforested, degraded, and underutilized fallow lands. This boosted the productivity of these landscapes and helped to reduce pressure on remaining forests while also providing a host of tangible benefits — from food security to clean water and carbon sequestration.

    The trees were planted to add character, function, and ecological value to green spaces. They will also help to restore important habitats for bird and insect species within the project area, encouraging a biologically diverse landscape.

    This project had benefits for local communities and the environment. The fruit trees will provide a nutritious food source to the local community, promoting food security. The project, by beautifying the landscape, also will help to foster a deeper connection to the environment.

    Sabangau Peatland Restoration

    This project is working to restore a globally significant peat-swamp forest in Sabangau National Park, one of the largest terrestrial carbon stores in the world, which suffered a catastrophic burning of 83,000 hectares in 2015. This project was a grassroots approach to addressing the root causes of forest loss and protecting the reforested area over the long-term.

    The community nurseries for this project were also a base for supporting community development through sustainable livelihoods. This involved providing training and start-up resources for local people to introduce peat-friendly agriculture, permaculture, and aquaculture practices that reduce drainage and reduce the use of fire, as our local partners work towards a fire-free future for Central Kalimantan.

    This restoration project helped to restore habitat for a range of irreplaceable species and safeguard some of Indonesia's globally important carbon stores in the fight for climate. Some of the species directly impacted are orangutans, white-bearded gibbons, and red leaf monkeys.

    Mangrove Reforestation

    Home to an incredible range of species, mangrove forests in the Philippines are biodiversity hotspots. At the reforestation site for this project, mangroves provide nesting and breeding habitat for fish and shellfish, migratory birds, and sea turtles. Mangroves also provide vital protection to corals from erosion, sedimentation, and human intrusions. This project’s broader conservation activities around the mangrove planting include plastic removal, conservation awareness and education, creating and supporting marine protected areas, coral and fish monitoring, and conservation training.

    This mangrove planting will bring back food resources for local communities for years to come. In addition to fish and shrimp, crabs and lobsters, bivalve and gastropod molluscs, and other invertebrates are observed at the project sites. The mangroves planted here will provide coastal protection, erosion control, sediment stabilization, flood regulation, nutrient supply and regeneration, waste treatment, and wildlife habitats.
