Celebrate Plant a Tree Day on September 28th

Each year on September 28th, One Tree Planted celebrates Plant a Tree Day, a global day of action that inspires thousands of nature lovers around the world to plant trees, remove invasive species, clean up litter, establish community gardens and more!

Plant a Tree day started in 2018, when 30 community reforestation events were organized by One Tree Planted, engaging 600 volunteers to plant over 7,000 trees and shrubs. Today, Plant a Tree Day has grown into a global movement that brings us together to make a positive environmental impact.

Planting trees is just one piece within the larger mosaic of action needed to address the dual crises of biodiversity loss and climate change, but from restoring old-growth forests to empowering rural smallholder farmers with life-changing sustainable agroforestry trees, we have seen the incredible things we can accomplish when we work together. No impact is too small, and when enough ordinary people take direct action, it adds up to something extraordinary.

Why Was Plant A Tree Day Established?

While there are many reasons to celebrate Plant A Tree Day, here's what inspired us to establish the day:

  1. Fall is a great time to plant trees. While most people know that spring is a good time to plant, many don't realize that fall is also a great time (and for some species and climates, it's actually better). So we wanted to take action and raise awareness for trees during this special time of year.
  2. Personal experience is priceless — and getting your hands in the dirt can be both inspiring and impactful. It's a way to connect with the Earth, give back to nature, and learn about what's going on with the environment near you.

How Can You Get Involved?

Want to help us celebrate? There are many ways to join the fun:

  • Roll up your sleeves and plant a native tree in your yard or on your property.
  • Sign up for a volunteer tree planting or environmental restoration event with your local environmental organization.
  • Leave the planting to us!
