What is Plant a Tree Day?

Each year on September 28th, One Tree Planted celebrates Plant a Tree Day, a flagship awareness day that inspires people around the world to take action for nature.

Plant a Tree day began in 2018, when 30 community reforestation events were organized by One Tree Planted, engaging 600 volunteers to plant over 7,000 trees and shrubs. Today, Plant a Tree Day has grown into a global movement that brings us together to make a positive environmental impact.

Why Was Plant a Tree Day Established?

While there are many reasons to celebrate Plant A Tree Day, here are the top two that inspired us to establish the day:

  1. We are stronger together. Everything we do, whether it’s making a donation or sharing a message, affects the world around us. Plant a Tree Day leverages the power of community to multiply individual action into collective impact.
  2. Our future depends on nature. Between 1990-2020, the world lost more than 420 million hectares of forest.  Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent, species are disappearing at an alarming rate, and our natural resources are dwindling. The challenges are profound, but reforestation is a science-backed solution anyone can support.
  3. Fall is a great time to plant trees. While most people know spring is a good time to plant, many don't know that fall is also a great time (and for some species and climates, it's actually better). So we wanted to take action and raise awareness for trees during this special time of year.

Why Plant Trees?

From the air we breathe to the food we eat, trees play a critical role in sustaining life on Earth. Here are a few examples of the benefits trees provide:

  • Ecosystem Services: The ecosystem services provided by the world’s forests are valued at an estimated $16.2 trillion (USD) annually
  • Biodiversity: Trees are the ultimate keystone species: healthy forests encompass richly layered habitat types and provide shelter to a breathtaking range of biodiversity — including 80% of amphibian species, 75% of bird species, and 68% of mammal species.
  • Climate: Forests currently absorb 30% of the CO2 that is emitted globally. Crucially, a majority of this carbon resides in forest soils, anchored by networks of symbiotic roots, fungi and microbes. Because of this, forests are typically considered carbon sinks (places that absorb more carbon than they release.
  • Human Impact: Over 1.6 billion people depend on forests for timber, food, fuel, jobs, and shelter.
  • Urban Heat: Trees and vegetation reduce surface and air temperatures through the process of transpiration (a plant’s loss of water, mainly through the stomata of leaves), and by providing shade. Shaded surfaces, for example, may be 20–45°F (11–25°C) cooler at peak temperatures than unshaded materials.
  • Clean Water/Drought: Trees can absorb between 10-150 gallons of water a day 10-150 gallons of water a day, but they only keep about 5% of that for their own growth.
