From the lush Congo Basin rainforest to coastal mangroves in the south, Africa's forests are home to a breathtaking range of ecosystems that play an irreplaceable role in our planet's health. These forests provide essential ecosystem services, regulating local and global climates, controlling water flows, and supporting the livelihoods of millions who rely on them for sustenance, medicine, income, and cultural heritage.
African forests and tree cover have been in accelerated decline over the past two decades — primarily due to land-use conversion associated with human activities such as expanding agriculture and commodity crops, logging, and charcoal-making. Other major impacts include mining, settlement, and infrastructure. People living in heavily deforested areas often depend on forests for their food, shelter, water, and livelihoods, making restoration of the continent's forests an even more critical undertaking.

One of the key programs in Africa is Terrafund for AFR100, a consortium of One Tree planted, WRI and Realize Impact, with projects in 27 African countries. AFR100 is a country-led effort to bring 100 million hectares of land in Africa under restoration by 2030. Through this program, we are concentrating our impact in three landscapes where hundreds of community champions operate, governments have made impressive commitments, and the need is greatest: Kenya’s Greater Rift Valley, the Lake Kivu & Rusizi River Basin of Burundi, DRC, and Rwanda, and the Ghana Cocoa Belt.
Reforestation in Africa focuses on restoring wildlife habitat, soil quality, and critical watersheds, while also improving people's lives. View the reforestation map to discover areas where we have planted trees in Africa.

Learn MoreReforestation is one of the best ways to restore ecosystems that have been degraded or deforested. Plant trees to support reforestation work in the locations where it is needed most.
Planting trees is key to restoring Africa's rich natural heritage, preventing desertification, and building resilience against droughts, floods, and other climate-related challenges. They enrich the soil, conserve water, and support diverse ecosystems.
