TerraFund for AFR100 was established to support AFR100, a country-led effort to bring 100 million hectares of land in Africa into restoration by 2030. Learn more
With your help, we will:
- Create jobs and support local communities
- Improve climate change resilience & mitigation
- Restore forest cover to improve food and water security
- With 65% of Africa's agricultural land facing degradation, economic and environmental challenges are intensifying. Climate change exacerbates these issues with lower crop yields, erratic rainfall and prolonged droughts, making life increasingly difficult. Despite holding 17% of the world's forest cover, Africa's forests are threatened by deforestation.
With approximately 800 million hectares of land needing restoration, African landscapes hold tremendous potential. This potential positions Africa as a leader in environmental recovery, supported by thousands of Restoration Champions. Through TerraFund for AFR100, these champions, and the local communities where they operate, are empowered to restore biodiversity and pursue sustainable economic development. - TerraFund for AFR100 is helping to empower an unprecedented environmental and socio-economic transformation across Africa. By 2028, the efforts of 100 restoration champions will culminate in planting over 14 million trees, rejuvenating 20,000 hectares of land, and improving natural regeneration. This monumental effort will restore vital nutrients to the soil, control erosion, enhance biodiversity, and contribute significantly to combating the global climate crisis.
Beyond ecological benefits, the initiative will create over 35,000 jobs, fostering sustainable living and poverty reduction within local communities. Moreover, it will extend its impact to over 200,000 individuals by improving food security and providing comprehensive training programs to enhance on-ground knowledge and capabilities. This holistic initiative empowers communities and unlocks significant market opportunities for growth, development, and scalable economic benefits, ensuring lasting environmental and economic impacts across Africa. - A personalized tree certificate (see gallery) to say thanks for your donation. - In every TerraFund for AFR100 project, native and non-native tree species play a pivotal role in restoration. Native species, deeply rooted in the local ecology, offer economic benefits like timber and non-timber forest products while supporting biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. Non-native species, when carefully selected, can enhance agricultural diversity and soil health in agroforestry and silvopasture systems without harming local ecosystems.
These species provide communities with essential food and income sources through fruit and fodder production. However, their introduction is meticulously evaluated to prevent ecological imbalance, ensuring they offer long-term environmental and economic benefits without contributing to invasive species growth. This balanced approach underscores the importance of diversity in restoration projects, fostering sustainable development and community empowerment.

Wells for Zoë
Malawi
Wells for Zoë strives to make a positive impact for impoverished community members by offering jobs to locals, while also providing access to clean drinking water. With a general focus on increasing gender equality in Malawi, 70% of those employed are women. Additionally, Wells for Zoë supports education for young girls and women.
Aiming to improve livelihoods, free fruit tree seedlings are provided to community planters and nursery workers as additional rewards to plant on their own lands. This ensures a higher participation for labour-intensive task and also food security for often malnourished families. Some of these fruits include mango, orange, tangerine, avocado, apple, and Brazil nuts.
Kijani Forestry
Uganda
Kijani Forestry focuses on supporting local communities in Uganda through reforestation, as trees hold the power to break the cycle of poverty and create wealth for rural farmers. Hundreds of land-holding farmers in this region, of which approximately 55% are women, have shown interest in planting trees to improve their family’s futures.
Reforestation provides food, fuel, livestock fodder, construction materials, and ultimately improved income for farmers in an industry that has been constantly increasing demand and decreasing supply. By expanding into fruit trees, farmers are ensured a future where the seedlings planted today turn into food and income for many years to come.
International Tree Foundation
Kenya
International Tree Foundation embraces agroforestry as a restoration approach by integrating crops and trees. This ultimately helps to support local communities both ecologically and economically, thus allowing regions to flourish on a global scale.
In order to provide sustainable livelihoods for local farmers, a strong focus on increasing household income is placed, while also promoting Women empowerment and gender equality. Thanks to agroforestry, health and nutrition is also improved for vulnerable households. Benefits of reforesting this region include improved soil fertility and water conservation, and increased biodiversity.
