From the Black Forest of Brother’s Grimm lore to the historic Leiria Pine Forest, woodlands are woven through the fabric of Europe’s history. 8,000 years ago, before the First Agricultural Revolution, studies indicate that Europe was primarily covered in forest. Today, despite significant declines, the region remains one of the most forested in the world — and its tree cover is dominated by broadleaf deciduous and evergreen coniferous trees.
Europe’s forests have historically faced extreme deforestation pressure as a result of human expansion, conflict, the industrial revolution, and other factors. Pests, diseases, and climate change only intensify the pressure on already fragmented woodlands — and in the UK alone, millions of ash trees are threatened by Chalara ash dieback. As Europe experiences increasing climate change impacts such as record-high temperatures, forest fires in Greece, and flooding in Italy, reforestation is more important than ever.

Reforestation in Europe focuses on re-establishing woodlands, improving ecosystem services, and creating habitat for wildlife. View the reforestation map to discover areas where we have planted trees in Europe.
Europe’s forests have suffered significant loss over the past millennia. Our tree-planting projects across the continent are working to restore these lost forests and create new ones. Discover more about our work in countries across Europe.
Armenia’s forest cover has drastically declined due to agriculture and grazing. Our reforestation projects aim to boost biodiversity and restore the natural beauty of the country’s rugged alpine landscapes.
Learn MorePortugal, once heavily forested, now retains only a quarter of its original forest cover. Our efforts in Portugal focus on restoring lands devastated by fires and desertification, engaging local communities in the process.
Learn MoreSpain’s fertile lands are increasingly threatened by deforestation, desertification, and soil degradation. Our work in Spain is dedicated to restoring diverse landscapes and combating the environmental challenges that threaten them.
Learn MoreThe UK’s once-glorious forests have largely disappeared, leaving it one of Europe’s least wooded regions. Our planting projects aim to create community woodlands, engage schools, and enhance biodiversity, bringing new life to the UK’s landscapes.

Learn MoreReforestation is one of the best ways to restore ecosystems that have been degraded or deforested. Plant trees to support reforestation work in the locations where it is needed most.
Europe's rich tapestry of landscapes, shaped by centuries of human interaction with nature, holds unique historical and ecological value. Reforestation in Europe is a balance of restoring ancient woodlands and supporting modern communities in a warming world. By fostering nature's recovery, restoration efforts can help mitigate the severity of climate change, support ecosystem resilience, and enhance biodiversity and ecological connectivity.
