5 Simple Strategies to become a Sustainable Business

As businesses and consumers are becoming more aware of their environmental impact, we've noticed a growing interest in sustainability in business. All companies, regardless of their size or annual income, can make simple sustainable swaps to improve their environmental footprint. From product materials and packaging to suppliers and distribution, there are endless opportunities to make your business or workplace more sustainable.

Before getting into our tips to green up your business, let's clarify what is sustainability in business? According to Harvard Business School, sustainability in business means doing business without negatively impacting the environment, community, or society as a whole — and it addressing at least one of two main categories below:

  • The effect business has on the environment
  • The effect business has on society

When companies don't assume responsibility for as to their environmental and societal impact, the opposite can happen, leading to issues like environmental degradation, inequality, and social injustice. That said, when it comes to implementing sustainability in your business, don't let perfect be the enemy of the good: do what you can with the resources you have today, and seek to incorporate sustainability practices into your business model.

Here Are 5 Easy Ways To Make Your Business More Sustainable:

1. Set Long-Term Goals And Make A Plan

As the quote goes: a goal without a plan is just a wish. Conduct the business eco-audit as part of your sustainability strategy and review your current environmental impact with a fine-toothed comb, noting the areas where your business can improve. Make a long-term plan for your business or employer to utilize more sustainable business practices that will help reduce your impact moving forward. From switching to recycled paper or packaging to reevaluating your supply chain and product manufacturers, there's always room for improvement!

2. Get Your Employees Involved

There’s strength in numbers, and the more people that are on board with your sustainability goals, the better! Get your employees involved by making them aware of your long-term sustainability goals and encouraging them to do their part to support them. From appointing a sustainability manager to implementing remote work days, incentivizing eco-friendly habits or even holding your own tree planting event, working together with your employees will help you achieve (or exceed) your sustainability goals!

3. Work With Green Businesses

It’s easy to get lost in the entrepreneurial shuffle and forget about the businesses that your own organization supports on a daily basis. Wherever possible, consider sustainable alternatives: can you source a local supplier, switch to an eco-friendly manufacturer or use renewable energy? What about simply using green cleaning products or compostable packaging? All of the little things make a difference, and while these swaps may seem small, they can add up to significant impact over time.

4. Reduce Company Waste

We know that composting and recycling are great habits to implement in the workplace, but what about overall waste reduction? Reduce the amount of waste your business produces by cutting out paper mailers, donating excess food, offering sustainable swag, removing single-use items and communicating your waste goals with your employees and suppliers to make sure that you’re all on the same page.

Plant Trees Where They're Needed Most

As the need for reforestation is global and ever-changing, we feature where trees are most needed now. Today, we're raising funds to jumpstart forest fire recovery in British Columbia. Learn more

With your help, we will:

  • Restore landscapes damaged by a historic season of wildfires
  • Create habitat for iconic biodiversity like the moose and grizzly bear
  • Support old-growth management areas to maintain complex ecosystems
  • This reforestation initiative is helping to restore the landscape in British Columbia after the Hanceville fire burned over 590,000 acres in 2017 and natural regeneration has not occurred. The fire has impacted the forest, soils, riparian ecosystems, wildlife, and water quality. Local indigenous communities have seen their ability to hunt and gather food drastically altered. But your support will go a long way! The goal of planting trees here is to not only re-establish a healthy forest, but also to plant species that will be resilient in the face of climate change. Thank you so much for your support of healthy forests! 🌲
  • Planting trees will catalyze the process of returning the area to a forested state. Newly planted trees will begin the process of sequestering atmospheric carbon, and over time improve the hydrological benefits of the forest. The ecosystems that have been greatly simplified by extreme fire conditions will once again become complex ecosystems, This project will also create habitat for many local wildlife species including mule deer, moose, black and grizzly bear, wolves, sandhill cranes, various raptors, songbirds, and small mammals.
  • A personalized tree certificate (see gallery) to say thanks for your donation. We'll also send you updates about this project, so you can track the impact your trees are having on the community and environment.
  • B.C.'s rich forest diversity includes more than 40 different species of native trees, with some of Canada’s most interesting and valuable tree species. In this project, we made efforts to maximize species diversity, including the following species: Douglas-fir, lodgepole pine, hybrid spruce, ponderosa pine, trembling aspen.
