SCALING A GLOBAL SEED BANK NETWORK TO ENSURE THE FORESTS OF TOMORROW

One Tree Planted x Terraformation

Forests are the most powerful carbon capture system on Earth today. Global reforestation has the potential to sequester up to 10 gigatons of CO2 annually — nearly one-fourth of all global emissions — and restore the biodiversity upon which our ecosystems and economies depend.

But every tree starts with a seed.

The Problem

The Problem

Nearly 30% of all tree species are at risk of extinction. And we don’t have enough of the right seeds in the right places to restore these species.

We must increase native seed supplies to scale reforestation efforts around the world.

Empowering Women Farmers in Rwanda

In 2019, we completed three separate projects in Rwanda, all of which centered around agroforestry. The first was with a women-led coop that planted 35,000 fruit-producing trees; the second a group of students who planted 9,000 trees as part of an initiative to fight poverty; and the third was with farmers who planted 60,000 trees to produce sustainable coffee.

Our Solution

Terraformation seed banks enable localized seed storage, empowering communities across the globe to grow resilient native forests.

Our seed banks are off-grid, solar-powered, and temperature-controlled, meaning they can accelerate restoration in even the most remote locations. They also come with specialized software and training to upskill community members in seed collection and advance project success.

Here’s the most important part: when a seed bank succeeds, so does its community. Native forest restoration comes with co-benefits such as job creation, flood control, watershed security, crop resilience, pollinator promotion, microclimate cooling, and more

The value of restoration has gained traction everywhere, from COP26 to corporate boardrooms. Seeds are more than just a climate solution — they’re a catalyst for a better future.

How One Tree Planted Will be Using Our Mobile Seed Bank

One Tree Planted has been working diligently to address the main barriers to wildfire restoration in California, which are: seed collection, seed availability and nursery space. Behind the scenes, we’ve been busy building strategic partnerships with major nursery suppliers that allow us to provide access and reserve nursery space for our on the ground planting partners, as well as supporting seed collection efforts across the state.

Thanks to Terraformation’s generous donation of a Mobile Seed Bank, we’re thrilled to be able to help our on the ground reforestation partners address supply issues by increasing their seed collection and processing capabilities. This will increase the number of native plants and tree seed that they can collect, which will in turn help ensure the long-term survival of rare plants. The Seed Bank will also offer an interactive, hands-on experience for our partners and volunteers, as well as providing training for youth who are interested in working in the nursery or seed collection space!

Why is this so critical? Reforestation is dependent on a reliable supply of viable seeds collected from native tree species. Seed Banking prevents gaps in plant propagation and supports biodiversity, and is a particularly valuable conservation tool for endemic species — especially those that are threatened and/or endangered. We’re so excited to be able to provide this opportunity for our partners and communities to learn, engage and secure their seed supply.
