Big cities are not really my thing. I’m more of a country girl. One of the main reasons is the greenspace that it displays.
The closer I am to the earth, the better I feel. At first, I didn’t really see the correlation between trees and my happiness level. Now, it’s blatantly obvious. Given that trees have a positive impact on air quality, maybe it’s the fact that I can breathe better.
But what about city living, is it possible to have that good, close to the earth feeling in an urban setting? Of course it is! Recent studies have shown that having as few as 10 trees on a city block can create a positive ripple effect.
Since a large percentage of the population in many countries are urban dwellers, it is important to bring greenspace to city centers. This will not only increase air quality, but it’s also likely to improve the mental health of the community, and decrease cardio-metabolic conditions amongst residents.
That’s one side of how trees promote good health. Let’s go deep into the Amazon Forest to better understand another.
Since health is likely the most personal of the 6 pillars of tree planting, I’m going to share a story with you about my travels.
While I was visiting Ecuador, I had the good fortune of spending time in the jungle. I was doing my best to stay healthy, however one morning I woke up with a stomach bug that was not pleasant. Personally, I’m not a fan of taking pills. Let nature run its course.
Luckily the local community I was staying in took good care of me. No sooner after explaining my symptoms did they present me with remedies. Straight from the forest was an assortment of natural medicines that saved the day. I quickly recovered from what was causing me grief, and I was able to get back to enjoying the paradise I was wrapped in.
So whether you plant a tree in the city or help to reforest the Amazon, you are doing a service to your health and mine. I encourage you do both since as I often say, it’s all connected.
In the event that you can’t make it to the Amazon to plant a tree, we’ve got you covered. The local planting though, that’s in your hands. Go ahead, pick up a shovel, and get digging. Your health will thank you.
