At One Tree Planted, 2023 was a year for the record books. In June, we celebrated the incredible milestone of 100 million trees planted since our inception. And by the end of the year, we proudly planted 51,967,225 million trees, restoring 160,038 hectares (395,462.5 acres) across 394 projects in 72 countries.
As climate change impacts intensify, they are putting an increased strain on our natural resources — and on front line communities around the world. As one of the top nature-based solutions to climate change, tree planting is more important now than ever.
As we head into 2024, we will continue to be a leader in reforestation efforts. We're excited to continue growing our strategic global partnerships, driving a new phase of growth in the reforestation space.
But before we pick our shovels back up, let's dig into One Tree Planted's 2023 impact!
In 2023, we worked with 315 planting partners on 394 projects in 72 countries. Through these projects, 242,458 families were supported, 5,336 women were involved, and 6,939 jobs were created.
We're proud to continue to scale our work and reach more and more people. But to us, impact goes beyond the numbers. And reforestation is about more than just trees.
As agroforestry trees grow, they provide nutritious food and sources of income for farming families. As mangroves grow, they support fisheries and shield communities from the full force of storm surges. As oak trees grow, they provide habitat for a wealth of biodiversity, improving climate change resilience and ecosystem health. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
In North America, our projects restore forests after wildfires, repair ecosystem damage caused by a history of settlement, industry and resource extraction, support endangered species like the Southern Resident Orca of the Pacific Northwest, plant trees in urban areas for environmental justice, and more. In 2023, a total of 18,061,987 trees were planted in Canada and the United States.
In Latin America, many of our projects focus on restoring forests and landscapes so the benefits of healthy tropical forests can be felt around the world. Our partners work with communities that have been impacted by deforestation, training them in sustainable forest management practices and agricultural techniques such as sustainable agroforestry. In 2023, a total of 12,654,652 trees were planted through projects in Brazil, Columbia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Argentina, and the Andes.
In Africa, our projects restore wildlife habitat, stabilize soils, safeguard critical watersheds, and improve the lives of communities who rely on forests for their livelihoods. Our planting partners promote sustainable agroforestry and educate smallholder farmers about the benefits of improved forestry practices. Projects are designed to provide communities with sustainable sources of food, fuelwood, and income. In 2023, 1,715,600 trees were planted through projects in Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, Nigeria, Tanzania, and the DRC.
Our Asia projects seek to reverse the negative effects of deforestation and conventional agriculture by introducing community-based agroforestry to encourage the positive behavior of local communities and maintain forests as a sustainable source of income. Our reforestation partners in Asia are working to ensure balance is restored to forest ecosystems and the local communities that depend on them.
Our projects in the Pacific are restoring forests following the destruction of the Black Summer bushfires, rejuvenating critical habitats for wildlife like koalas and cockatoos, and safeguarding community watersheds through the restoration of indigenous tree species.
In 2023, 6,787,699 trees were planted in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Pakistan, and Nepal.
In Europe, our projects aim to re-establish historic woodlands, increase climate change resilience, improve public access to green spaces, improve habitat connectivity, and stabilize and enrich soils. Restoring native woodlands is an important step towards climate regulation, protecting access to clean water, and encouraging native wildlife. This year, we planted 5,120,071 trees through impactful projects in Armenia, Albania, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, France, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Scotland, Spain and Germany.
AFR100 is a pan-African, country-led effort to bring 150 million hectares of land across Africa into restoration by 2030. So far, 34 countries have joined the AFR100 movement.
To support this movement, in partnership with WRI, Realize Impact and Burka Fund, we initiated a program called TerraFund for AFR100. The program is currently supporting 92 locally-led organizations to reforest Africa's land and contribute to economic development. With this program, more than 20 Million trees will be restored, thousands of jobs will be created, and thousands of communities will benefit over the next 10 years.
In 2023, the TerraFund for AFR100 projects that we manage planted 7,843,069 trees in Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, DRC, Ethioia, Ghana, Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Mali, Mozambique, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Every region we plant in is as unique as the communities who call them home, but what holds true no matter where you go is that reforestation is about more than planting trees. From the Queyna Reymi festival high in the Andes mountain range to koala habitat corridors in Australia and community forests across England's countryside, we find inspiration daily in the grit, fortitude, and creativity of our reforestation partners and the communities they work with.
We hope you're as inspired as we are by all that we accomplished together in 2023. Ready to begin making an impact for forests in 2024? Plant a tree today!
